of reflection and recovery. what happened in newtown is nightmarish for all of us and impossible to comprehend. there are many issues to address, guns, culture of violence and how we treat the mentally ill in this country. here we'll grapple with all of that in the days and weeks to come as america will. if the slaughter of 26 doesn't provoke real reform, you have to wonder what will. first, we have to heal. so for the next hour, we discuss recovery. we begin with the president in newtown last night. >> we gather here in memory of 20 beautiful children and 6 remarkable adults. they lost their lives in a school that could have been any school. in a quiet town full of good and decent people. that could be any town in america. >> and this last hour on the senate floor. >> i ask that the united states senate observe a moment of silence to honor the victims of the sandy hook elementary school tragedy. >> today, newtown starts the first of 26 funerals. two students will be laid to rest this afternoon. first is jack pinto. a new york giants fan. smart kid. number 8, victor cruz, on sund
, as well. and the images here in newtown like that they continue to grow. i mean, the makeshift memorials. there are 26 angels that have been placed on a hillside. the 26 christmas trees that the makeshift memorial there continues to grow, as well. balloons and candles and cards and teddy bears. and behind me, as well. so many folks continue to stop by and pay their respects and to leave a momento of some sort. here's the latest on the investigation. first of all, as you probably know, schools opened in this town but no official word on when sandy hook elementary school, the students who went to school there going to a nearby middle school, no official word there on just when that is going to happen. law enforcement officers, law enforcement officials have told us they have seized a fair amount of evidence in this case. among that evidence, computer hard drives, some computers, as well. they're concerned that the evidence may be too badly damaged to be able to green any sort of useful information from it but they continue to try to do that. they have discovered that he was, the shooter, 2
